Filtering by document type in Magisterial Mode

Narrow the AI to only the kinds of magisterial documents you want.

May 11, 2026

When you're using Magisterial sources, you can further restrict the AI to only specific types of magisterial documents — for example, only encyclicals, or only the Catechism.

Apply a document-type filter

  1. Click the + button in the chat box.
  2. Choose Sources and select Magisterial.
  3. Click Filter. A window opens listing all document types available.
  4. Check one or more document types. You can use the search box to find types quickly.
  5. Close the dialog. The filter is now active for your next prompt.
A 'Filter' dialog overlays the chat page with the subtitle 'Limit the AI to reference only the selected document types' and a 'Search document types' input below it.

When this is useful

  • You want to cite only encyclicals when writing about Church teaching.
  • You're researching canon law specifically.
  • You want answers only from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  • You're looking for direction from apostolic letters or motu proprio.

Clearing the filter

  • Open + → Sources → Magisterial → Filter.
  • Click Clear Filter.

If you change mode to Auto, the filter is hidden but preserved — going back to Magisterial will restore your previous selection.

Notes

  • The list of document types is loaded from our library and may change as we index new documents.
  • The filter only applies while Magisterial is active. It has no effect in Auto.
